Hi! The key to doing this is called Pathfinding and we've written an article about how to do it here. We've also discussed it further in a forum post that's linked at the bottom of the article.

I noticed my biggest issue was i kept putting the walkable prims and static obstacle prims so close they mooshed. So now i make sure to see a teensy bit of space between prims. You can't really notice and it always fixes the issue.
Oh and if they moosh into the terrain the same thing...so lift floors a little bit up off the terrain.

I'm on Phoenix, too. Pathfinding is under the Build menu at the top of the screen. =)

Phoenix does not have and never will have pathfinding. It is no longer a supported viewer. If you want to be able to setup pathfinding you will have to use one of the more modern viewers that are optimized for the newer content. Firestorm (which is often mistaken for Phoenix) and SL Viewers both work.

You do not need to use the newer viewers to see pathfinding working, once it is properly setup, but you will have to use another viewer to set it up.

I've heard other people say they use the regular SL Viewer 3 for mesh uploads and pathfinding. Personally I use Viewer 3 all the time.

Progenitor is partially right. SL Viewer will work and Firestorm will work.
