is there really a point to knowing what people just earned points to get?

In the grand scheme of things, most things we do don't have a "point." That said, many people love to see their name in lights, if even for a moment, so we allow them to have their 2 minutes of glory when they accomplish an achievement. ;)

I love to see my name in lights!! Just once in while hahaha.

I think its a great thing, it gives you benchmarks to try achieve, and its informative as it lets you know where you are at in your breeding learning curve, be sure this is only the start there will be tons more new accolades to collect.
